VEHICLE REVIEW
2011 Honda CBR1000RR
With the CBR1000RR, Honda literally rewrote the rules for the sporting literbike class. Rated best by one magazine after another, the revolutionary CBR1000RR has established new standards for light weight, superlative handling, remarkably compact dimensions and exceptional performance. Also available with our high-tech electronically controlled Combined ABS for the ultimate in sophisticated sportbike braking performance, the CBR1000RR remains the yardstick to which all others are compared. For 2011, the CBR1000RR Fireblade comes in three exciting new colour variants. A new HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) tricolour version features new colours throughout, including a stunning gold trim, white wheels and HRC decals on the middle and upper front cowl, rear fender and front fender. A new full Honda Repsol racing livery proudly shows the Fireblade’s ties to the Moto GP RC212V and accentuates its race bred technology and heritage. There is also a special Graphite Black version with black wheels. It places a firm emphasis on the clean lines of the bodywork which contrast strongly with the silver coloured frame. All colours are available in both the Standard and the Combined ABS versions. The Fireblade’s design styling is pared-down and purposeful with an overall form that dispenses with anything that doesn’t support the twin goals of minimal weight and optimal mass centralisation. In 2010 its rear shape was revised and it featured a new clear-lens tail-light. The indicators and licence plate holder were integrated into a compact assembly which can be easily detached from the rear fender unit for closed track riding. Its low-slung exhaust received a redesigned muffler that improved cornering clearance, and further focused weight around the central mass. Designed for excellent handling and dynamic performance, the Fireblade’s front cowl is short and compact, incorporating striking line beam headlights. CBR1000RR engine performance is distinguished by exceptional torque throughout its range. Acceleration is smooth and powerful, seamlessly delivered from the lightest, most compact package. A Dual Sequential Programmed Fuel Injection system enables the engine to deliver quick-revving power, blistering torque and breathtaking acceleration, as well as smooth output and easy control. In order to maximise enjoyment of sports riding, innovations have been made to absorb fluctuations in engine torque and improve throttle control. In 2010 the ACG (alternating current electrical generator) flywheels were made bigger and crankshaft rigidity was enhanced to fit the flywheel size, increasing crankshaft inertia mass by 6.87%. This enables generation of optimal crankshaft inertia mass during racing, resulting in smoother, torquier power delivery and improving throttle control.

Through the use of lightweight components including an aluminium cylinder head sealing bolt, thin-walled flange section for the exhaust pipe and a smaller fan motor, this was achieved without any increase in weight. The engine’s silky-smooth delivery is aided by a unique Slipper Clutch which prevents any rear wheel lock-up on mistimed downshifts, as well as quick clutch re-engagement, light lever load and comfortable clutch action when accelerating. The CBR1000RR exhaust combines a compact configuration with maximum ground clearance and mass centralisation. Two valves in the muffler constantly tailor the system for maximum drive and smooth delivery and boost the machine’s power at full throttle. The oxygen-sensing HECS3 (Honda Evolutional Catalysing System) constantly monitors emissions, reducing any harmful gases and tailoring fuelling for the most efficient combustion mixture. In designing the sophisticated four-piece aluminium frame for the CBR1000RR Fireblade, Honda engineers aimed to perfect the delicate balance of strength, rigidity and lightness required for top superbike performance and handling. It also facilitates the positioning of all other components for mass centralisation. The gull-wing shaped swingarm is long, giving improved traction and rider feedback and a low centre of gravity. It is complemented by Honda’s innovative Unit Pro-Link rear suspension, derived from Honda’s racing pedigree. At the front, a fully adjustable 43mm HMAS cartridge-type front fork provides finely controlled damping characteristics and impressive torsion strength. Together, these systems provide assured road holding on both road and track. The Fireblade also features Honda’s second-generation HESD Honda Electronic Steering Damper which automatically tailors damping force according to an electronic system which monitors the bike’s speed. This enhances high-speed stability by minimising sudden steering changes, and also enables light, easy steering at low speeds. At the front, powerful radially-mounted four-piston calipers made of aluminium feature a one-piece monoblock construction for light weight and optimal rigidity. Six-point floating discs which self-centre provide an optimum braking performance.

Standard Features

The CBR1000RR is a perfect example of typical Honda industry-leading innovation. Combining tons of power, light weight, and refined, responsive handling with drop-dead good looks, it’s equally at home carving your favorite canyon as it is collecting wins on World Superbike podiums. That's the CBR1000RR—the ultimate liter-class sportbike experience.

Combined Anti-Lock Braking (C-ABS)
All-new, electronically controlled Combined ABS distributes brake force over both wheels, helping to maintain braking confidence in less than ideal conditions. Electronic measurement of rider input on each brake lever permits application of only the front or rear brake in some cases, while the system combines both brakes in others.
Unit Pro-Link Suspension
By eliminating the frame-mounted top shock mount, Unit Pro-Link isolates the chassis from bumps, resulting in more precise handling and better traction. Developed on Honda's championship-winning MotoGP bikes, it's a perfect example of the CBR's superior engineering.

MotoGP-Style Exhaust
The CBR1000RR's lowboy muffler not only looks cool and sounds great, it also offers a handling advantage by moving the silencer lower and closer to the bike's center of mass. GP bikes do that to make the machines more responsive, and you get the same benefit with the CBR1000RR.

Slipper Clutch
The CBR1000RR uses a patented slipper-clutch design with a special cam-assist mechanism for easier actuation. That means you get a light feel at the lever, the feedback a cable system provides, and all the backtorque-limiting benefits a slipper clutch provides.

Twin-Spar Aluminum Chassis
By varying the wall thickness of the chassis' main elements, our engineers can fine-tune chassis rigidity precisely, and in individual areas. You get a frame that offers the perfect balance of a stable riding platform but with no harshness.

Dual-Stage Fuel Injection
Two injectors per cylinder – one primary and one secondary – controlled by an ECU that senses RPM and throttle opening, ensure both low- and high-rpm performance. You get near instantaneous high-rpm response, along with great low-rpm metering and clean running.
Centrally Located Fuel Tank
Centrally located fuel tank increases mass centralization for a more compact frame design.
Idle Air Control Valve
Idle air control valve minimizes torque reaction and smoothes response to small throttle changes through gradual reductions of air and fuel intake when throttle is opened and closed.

Two-Stage Ram Air
Nose mounted, two-stage ram air system provides a high volume of cool air to the airbox, for linear power delivery and superb engine performance.

Honda Multi-Action System (HMAS) Inverted Fork
The HMAS cartridge fork features an exclusive internal piston construction. This innovative design employs smaller-diameter pistons to keep oil velocity high for improved damping characteristics and an expanded range of adjustability. The result: you get more precise suspension performance, especially over smaller surface irregularities.
Radial Front-Brake Calipers
The CBR1000RR's radial-mounted monoblock front-brake calipers are stiffer, for better brake feel and performance. Each caliper uses four chromium-plated aluminum pistons that squeeze lightweight 320mm floating discs for exceptional stopping power.

Honda Electronic Steering Damper
Power is one thing, but the key to a great sportbike is how it handles, and that’s where the Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) comes in. Compact, unobtrusive and super-smart, it helps maintain smoothly predictable high-speed handling and low-speed maneuverability.

Follow The Leaders
